Mancini will only be highest paid manager if Manchester City win Premier League & Champions League double

The Italian's new five-year contract at the Etihad Stadium is worth a basic annual salary of £5 million and is heavily incentivised

Roberto Mancini will only become the highest paid manager in the country if Manchester City win both the Premier League and the Champions League in the coming season, Goal.com can reveal. 

City announced on Monday that the Italian had agreed a new five-year deal to continue at the Etihad Stadium and build on last season’s title success.

Despite reports that the deal is worth £37.5 million to the Italian, it is understood the contract actually pays a basic annual salary of £5m and is heavily incentivised.

It means that Mancini will not be the highest paid boss in the Premier League - Arsene Wenger earns £6m-a-year - unless he brings more trophies to the club.

It is believed Mancini will be paid a bonus of £1m should City retain the Premier League title, a further £1m if they triumph in the Champions League, plus further bonuses relating to the FA Cup and League Cup.

City have also pledged to back Mancini behind the scenes, with the appointment of Attilio Lombaro as reserve team manager the first indicator of the 47-year-old’s increased power.

Mancini initially agreed terms with owner Sheikh Mansour and chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak during meetings in Abu Dhabi following City’s dramatic victory on the final day of the Premier League season.

His previous deal, which ran until 2013, was worth £3.5m-a-year and City took a calculated gamble by waiting until the end of the campaign to begin talks, protecting themselves from paying a huge compensation package had they decided to sack Mancini.

In the event, Mancini has been handsomely rewarded for his achievements since taking over in December 2009 as City look to build a dynasty.
