Alan Shearer has been ruled out of the running to be a member of Roy Hodgson’s England backroom team, Goal.com can reveal.
Hodgson and his No.2 Ray Lewington had their first face-to-face
meeting on Wednesday following the Fulham coach’s appointment for Euro
2012 on a short-term contract.
Goal.com understands that one of the
discussion points centred on identifying the third member of the
coaching set-up who will link up with Hodgson and Lewington at the end
of the season.
The Football Association want a younger figure with international
playing experience who the England players can identify with and who can
be a direct conduit between the squad and the management team.
However, it is believed that Hodgson is pushing for someone whose skill-set can make a difference on the training pitch.
Shearer has been ruled out because it is thought he is unwilling to
sacrifice his media commitments, while there are doubts about the
coaching expertise of the other early front-runners such Phil Neville
and Paul Ince.
Gareth Southgate, the FA head of elite development, Nick Barmby, who
was sacked as Hull City manager earlier this week, and Leicester City
manager Nigel Pearson are other names in the frame for a post designed
for Euro 2012 only.
Goal.com revealed last Friday that Fulham had been officially approached by the FA on Thursday about inviting Lewington to be part of Hodgson’s support team, initially for this summer, with a view to extending the role to England's World Cup qualifying campaign if all goes well.
The FA will cover Lewington's Fulham salary while he is with England
and pay the Premier League club a compensation sum for his services.
The FA has no plans to build an extensive
permanent coaching team to support Hodgson, unlike with his predecessor
Fabio Capello, while Stuart Pearce has already been axed from the senior
support team.
