Liverpool chief Tom Werner confident of busy transfer window & expresses admiration for Clint Dempsey

The American also insists that Kenny Dalglish enjoys the owners' "full support" and hopes that an FA Cup final victory would give the club "great confidence" for next season

Liverpool chairman Tom Werner has insisted that the club are looking to improve the squad in the transfer window, and has expressed his admiration for Fulham midfielder Clint Dempsey.

 

Premier League results for Kenny Dalglish's side have been below-par this season with the club's recent big-money signings, including Andy Carroll, Jordan Henderson and Stewart Downing, struggling to find their feet at Anfield.

However, Werner has ensured that the club will continue to pursue new targets during the summer transfer window. 

 

"We are confident that we will be making further progress in the future, and we are hard at work identifying transfer targets to help us continue to improve the squad," he told Goal.com.

Cottagers star Dempsey has been linked with the Reds after having scored a career-best 16 Premier League goals so far this season, with former Liverpool director of football Damien Comolli admitting that the 29-year-old would be one of his targets if he was at a top six club.

When asked whether the club would be interested in the Fulham attacker, Werner replied: "We never talk publicly about our transfer targets. However, any team would be lucky to have Clint Dempsey playing on their squad."

Werner also insists that Fenway Sports Group, the sports investment company that owns Liverpool, remains fully committed to manager Dalglish.

"We have great confidence in Kenny," Werner maintained. "He enjoys our full support."

Despite an inconsistent league campaign, Liverpool have the chance to add their second trophy this season when they play Chelsea in the FA Cup final on Saturday.

The Reds beat Championship side Cardiff City on penalties at the end of February to secure the League Cup crown.

 

"This season did not go as we had hoped in the Premier League, but we also have visited Wembley three times, and we have won the League Cup," Werner explained.

"Even if Chelsea defeats us, we are excited about the progress we are making and look forward to next season."

Werner only arrived at Anfield last season but says he has already come to learn of Liverpool's history in finals of cup competitions at Wembley.

Ending the season on a high note, he added, could invigorate the club ahead of the 2012-13 campaign.

"Wembley owns a special place for our club," Werner enthused. "I have heard stories from ex-players on how important winning the FA Cup was in 1965.

"Winning a second cup at Wembley next week would give everyone great confidence for the new season."
