Arsenal's Invincibles legend Sol Campbell has rocked the club by warning they must go on a £100million transfer spree if they want to have any hope of keeping Robin van Persie.
Campbell, the defensive rock of the Gunners team that went through the 2003-04 Premier League season unbeaten, believes contract rebel van Persie has “run out of patience” in his wait to lift a trophy at the Emirates.
And the man who famously exercised his right to seek silverware by walking out on Tottenham to join their sworn enemies at Highbury, warned RVP’s rift with Arsenal is “irreversible.”
Van Persie’s open letter to supporters, revealing he would not be signing a new deal, has sparked open war in the Gunners boardroom, with billionaire Alisher Usmanov and major shareholder Stan Kroenke at loggerheads over he club’s spending policy.
So it’s business as usual at the Emirates, where van Persie’s bolt for the escape hatch mirrors those of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri last summer.
This summer's signings of Germany forward Lukas Podolski and France striker Olivier Giroud have clearly not persuaded van Persie that the Gunners can challenge for silverware in the coming campaign.
