Rodgers hopeful of landing new Liverpool signing this week
The Anfield boss is hoping to make his first significant move in the
transfer market and discussed the futures of Andy Carroll, Craig
Bellamy and the club's returning loanees
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has revealed the club could announce a new signing by the end of the week.
As Goal.com exclusively revealed this week, the Reds are leading the chase for Chelsea forward Daniel Sturridge who has become unsettled at Stamford Bridge.
The Anfield outfit have also long been
linked with a move for Bologna attacker Gaston Ramirez, who was recently
named in Uruguay’s Olympic squad, with a £16 million move touted.
When questioned on whether there would be any imminent news on
signings, Rodgers told reporters: "We hope so, there won't be as many as
what has been [reported in the press], but the reality is we've made
three or four enquiries.
"Hopefully we'll get one tied up this
week. I will never speak about targets and possible players. There has
been a whole raft of players linked but there are very few that are
actual real targets."
After Rodgers' predecessor Kenny Dalglish
spent upwards of £100m on new talent during his ill-fated 18-month
spell in charge, the Northern Irishman refuted suggestions that the club
has a bottomless transfer kitty.
The Ulsterman also played down reports of Andy Carroll and Craig
Bellamy leaving the club after they were recently linked with AC Milan
and Cardiff respectively.
He added: "We haven't got a wheelbarrow full of money, certainly not the kind of amounts that some people seem to think.
“He's a good player, Andy. He'll always be linked whether he's here or
not. I've spoken to him on his holiday, he's a very good young player
but I haven't heard anything.
“At this stage it's just about assessing the squad, you never know the situation entirely until you come in.
"It's a bit broken this year because of the European Championships
but it'll just be a cause of building a squad that can compete.
"I had a good meeting with Craig last Monday to get a feel for where
he was at. He's 33 this week, he's pushing on but he's fine and he looks
after himself well.
"We’ll have a look over the summer and go from there."
Carroll and Bellamy are not the only Liverpool players who face an
uncertain future, with Alberto Aquilani and Joe Cole returning from loan
spells this week from Milan and Lille respectively.
Rodgers
was quick to stress that he had already spoke with with the pair and
insisted their attitudes would determine their status at the club.
He added: "Both players came back. I had a chat with Alberto, he's a
good guy. What's going to be important for every player is to have the
steel and the mind-set."
